Inside FDGM: How the Optional Slow-Retraction System Is Built

Automatic rewind is a standard function of a retractable hose reel, but different markets may have different expectations for retraction speed. Some customers targeting premium product ranges prefer to add a slow-retraction system for a more controlled return action.
At FDGM, slow retraction is available as an optional configuration rather than a standard feature on every product. It requires additional components and assembly work, so it is quoted separately according to the selected hose reel model and project requirements.
Why Choose Slow Retraction?
When the locking mechanism is released, the internal spring provides the force needed to return the hose to the reel. A standard automatic rewind configuration is designed to complete this process efficiently.
An optional slow-retraction system helps control the return speed. By reducing the speed of the returning hose, it helps limit excessive swinging and makes the retraction movement more stable.
This configuration may be suitable for customers who want to position their hose reel in a higher-end retail range or provide users with a more controlled operating experience.
Slow retraction does not replace the automatic rewind function. Instead, it modifies how quickly the hose returns after the lock is released.
Preparing the Slow-Retraction Components
A slow-retraction unit consists of several components that must work together inside the reel.
Before assembly, the required parts are prepared in batches and organized for the production process. The components shown here are only part of the complete mechanism. Once assembled, they form the slow-retraction section that is installed inside the hose reel.

Keeping the components organized helps production workers identify the correct parts and follow the required assembly sequence.
Assembling the Internal Mechanism
The gear components are assembled into their supporting structure before the complete unit is installed in the reel.
Because this mechanism affects the movement of the hose during retraction, the parts must be positioned correctly and secured during assembly. The completed unit must operate together with the reel's spring, locking mechanism and internal rotating structure.
The configuration may vary depending on the size and design of the selected hose reel. For this reason, buyers should confirm their slow-retraction requirement before samples and quotations are finalized.

Integrating the Unit Into the Hose Reel

After the slow-retraction section has been assembled, it is incorporated into the internal reel structure. The remaining hose reel components can then be installed according to the production sequence.
The completed product still provides the main functions expected from an automatic retractable hose reel:
The hose can be extended to the required working area.
The locking mechanism holds the hose close to the desired working length.
Pulling the hose again releases the lock.
The spring-powered system rewinds the hose.
The optional slow-retraction unit controls the return speed.
The hose guide also helps distribute the hose across the internal reel as it returns.
Checking Retraction Performance
After assembly, the retraction function should be checked to confirm that the hose extends, locks, releases and returns correctly.
FDGM conducts complete operating-cycle tests covering hose extension, locking and retraction. Current product requirements include at least 3,000 complete cycles.
Actual retraction time depends on the reel model, hose length and selected configuration. Buyers who require slow retraction should therefore confirm the model and performance requirements during sample development.
An Optional Upgrade for Different Markets
Not every customer needs slow retraction. Standard automatic rewind remains a practical configuration for many product ranges, while slow retraction provides an additional option for buyers who place greater emphasis on controlled hose return.
FDGM supports discussions about reel size, hose specifications, connectors, product colors, branding, packaging and optional slow-retraction configurations. Buyers can provide their target market, preferred model and estimated order quantity so that a suitable configuration can be evaluated.
