An automatic retractable hose reel is expected to extend smoothly, lock at a useful working length and rewind consistently after use. These functions depend on more than the appearance of the finished product. The internal spring mechanism, locking structure, hose connections and supporting components all need to work together.

At FDGM, laboratory testing supports both product development and routine quality evaluation. It allows our team to observe how a reel performs under repeated operation and helps identify areas that may require adjustment before production requirements are finalized.

Testing the Complete Retraction Cycle

One of the main evaluations carried out at FDGM is repeated operating-cycle testing.

During a complete cycle, the hose is extended, the locking mechanism is engaged and the hose is then released for retraction. This process evaluates the complete operating sequence instead of checking only the spring or one individual component.

FDGM retractable garden hose reel models are tested through at least 3,000 complete extension, locking and retraction cycles. During testing, the team can observe:

  • Extension and pulling consistency
  • Locking response at different working lengths
  • Retraction performance
  • Unusual noise or movement
  • Wear that may develop during repeated operation

These observations provide useful information for mechanism development and product improvement.

Pressure and Leakage Checks

For a garden hose reel, reliable water connections are essential. A reel may retract correctly but still create problems if its connectors, internal flow path or hose connections do not remain properly sealed.

FDGM uses pressure and leakage testing equipment to evaluate fluid-carrying components and assembled connections. The multi-channel test station allows several test points to be monitored through individual pressure gauges.

Depending on the product configuration and project requirements, the evaluation may include pressure holding, leakage inspection and burst testing. The applicable test pressure should be determined according to the hose, connector and reel model rather than applying one value to every product.

Evaluating Materials and Individual Components

The laboratory also contains equipment for evaluating selected materials and individual components.

This includes mechanical measuring instruments and salt-spray testing equipment.

These tools can support checks of component strength, hardness, spring-related performance or corrosion resistance when required by the product or customer project. Not every test is applied to every part. The appropriate test plan depends on the component, material, intended market and agreed product requirements.

This approach is particularly important for OEM and private-label projects, where product specifications, accessories and performance expectations may differ between Europe, the United States and Australia.

From Test Results to Product Development

Laboratory testing does not replace production inspection. Instead, it provides another layer of information that can support design review, sample evaluation and ongoing quality monitoring.

When a test reveals inconsistent locking, abnormal retraction or leakage, the team can examine the relevant structure or component and determine whether adjustments are needed.
